World of Sports: Hope in Hard Times

Michigan State's basketball team reached the final four fueled by three main things, Tom Izzo, starting PG Lucas, and bringing "sunlight to Detroit".  The state of Michigan has taking huge economics hits in the current economic recession.  Because of the loss of jobs, finances, and home, many have lost hope for a better tomorrow.  Michigan State's is nothing short of amazing and is well needed in the present situation.  It can be described as a miracle or an answered prayer.  This Michigan State is nothing like it was in the beginning of the season.  The Spartans were battered with injuries that caused them to loose games against top seeded completion.  Much improved and well motivated, number 2 Michigan State moved past an inspired Kansas and also scourged a high favorited Louisville.  The Spartans now begin to fight for more than themselves but also for the 60 year old that lost her 401k months before retiring and the average Joe searching for a job.  Their fight is fueled by more than 15 Spartans but by millions of Michigan citizens.

Sunlight in Detroit

Michigan State Basketball players are full aware of crisis in Michigan.  The Spartans spoke to media after the game Saturday and told them of the hope the people receive from watching them reach and exceed expectations.  They use the this as extra motivation.  For example, the Spartans came back from a deficit on a well toiled Connecticut team and left the game out of reach for a team adaptable for all situations.  The Spartans received contributions from players such as freshman guard Korie Lucious, who averages 3.1 points per game,  put up  points off the bench.  Michigan States bench outscored UCONN's 33-7. The Spartans will face UNC Monday for the NCAA Championship with all of Michigan behind them.
