My Take: Changes

The changes at Liberty Tech have been baffling, uprooting, and heartbreaking. It's hard to see that so many changes all at one time will not cause ill effects. In the last three years, Liberty has had three different principals giving the Junior Class a new prinicipal each year. The changes that Liberty Tech has faced are new systems, teachers, principals, and even new snacks in the snack machines. In addition to those moves, Liberty Tech's Science Department was completely uprooted and replaced. Now don't get me wrong some of the changes were needed including the new healthier snacks. But some changes are just unreal. For example Coach Dexter Williams, a two time State Champion Coach having to give up his passion because a JMCSS rule. Also, take the most recent change, Dr. Teresa McDaniel giving up her passion in the classroom the same way Coach Williams gave up his passion. She is to take an administration position at Liberty. Dr. Teresa McDaniel is one of the best teachers at Liberty Tech. The change might not be the best for the students that she teaches currently in her English I, Act Prep, and English III Honors class. Students at Liberty are very saddened by the decision. Dr. McDaniel will take her new position on August 25, 2009 after starting the years lessens in a fast moving block schedule system. The student's new teacher will be Starla Teague, a paralegal at a successful law firm.

These changes are hard and in some ways necessary to improve the way students learn. Who is better to say than the student himself. A student will tell you if they are being pushed or if the teacher just talks about his or her personal affairs for 90 minutes. In the end the most important thing is the student and how the students are learning. If the students do not learn and grow, then the changes have failed. If the students degress in test scores and Grade Point Averages then the changes were too much. What will become of these changes? Good or Bad.
